An affiliate marketing program is a revenue-sharing marketing
strategy where a merchant pays their affiliates a commission
for referring business to their website. The webmaster signs up
as an affiliate in the affiliate marketing program and gets a
login id. He then collects information about the marketing
material for the affiliate marketing program and uses it on his
web site as banners, ad- links and search boxes. If a visitor to
the website is interested in one of the affiliate marketing
program links then he clicks the referred link and purchases
the product. The marketer identifies that the particular sale
has been through the affiliate marketing program, and he pays
the affiliate his commission. By having an affiliate marketing
program the owner does not pay for expensive advertising but
pays when a sale, lead or subscription action occurs.

There are numerous benefits that an affiliate marketing program
has to a marketer. Affiliate marketing programs have become one
of the easiest way to advertise the products in the market. An
agreement is formed between the website owner or affiliate and
the merchant. The website owner allows the merchant to promote
his product through his site and the merchant pays the
affiliate commission for the sales generated through these

programs are a cost effective medium to provide brand
awareness. It also provides a wider market for the merchant.
The marketer gets a chance to identify new markets which he
might not have thought of without the affiliate marketing

world wide. The affiliates can introduce the products and
services to the niche markets which have been neglected and
thus boost the business of the marketer.

When trying to optimize your website, you will need to gather all the information about the few visitors that you now have. This will help you make improvements to your site and increase your traffic. One of the best ways to gather this statistical data is through the use of a counter.



Some of you may not know that dropping a counter onto each page of your website will not only show you the number of hits to that page, but also logs tidbits of important information too.



The following is a list of some of the data that is collected from a stat-counter.



Screen Resolution:



Knowing the screen resolution tells you how the majority of visitors view your web pages. For example: If your design is based around 800 x 600 screen resolution, and the majority of you visitors use a 1024 x 768 resolution, you may want to redesign your layout.



Keyword:



If a visitor was directed to your site by a search engine, then knowing the search term used will help in optimizing your page around important keywords relevant to you sites topic.



Length Of Visit:



This is important that if everyone is showing up to your site, but doesn't seem to stay, then check for slow loading of you page or some other reason that might turn away visitors.



Enter-Page/ Exit-Page



If your visitors are leaving from the same page they first come to, then you will need to figure out why they are not visiting other pages. Maybe the links to the other pages are hidden by are toomuch clutter, too small or non-descriptive.



Returning Visitors:



This will help you determine which pages your visitors find important. You can then concentrate more effort on those topics.



There are many more tidbits of statistical data a stat-counter can provide, and best of all you can get them for free. Theses services are provided for the benefit of building back links, and in hopes to sell you upgrades.



If you think that a counter looks tacky, you have the option to make it invisible. This will still enable you to collect important statistical data without your visitors seeing the counter itself.



Conclusion:



So if your serious about getting more traffic, you must first learn all you can from the traffic you already have, and a free stat-counter is one of the best places to start.

1. Why Start Your Own Affiliate Program?

Multiple web sites and distributors selling your product can
result in increased sales and profits. Unlike conventional
advertising, affiliate programs pay only for performance.
Commissions are not paid out unless sales are made.

Also, with many more web sites linking to yours, your link
popularity is sure to increase in search engines, resulting in
additional traffic and income.

2. Combine a Merchant Account with Your Affiliate Program

If your product is downloadable (such as electronic books or
software), you might consider ClickBank.com. For a $49.95
initial fee, you can process credit cards and on-line cheques
for $1.00 per transaction plus 7.5% of sales. As an added
bonus, you have your own built-in affiliate program.

ClickBank gives you a listing on their web site and visitors
can buy your products and join your affiliate program. You
choose the commission rate you are willing to pay. All
commission payments are handled by ClickBank. One downside is
that you can`t run a two-tiered program.

3. Use an Affiliate Program Script

If you are comfortable with running CGI scripts, you may wish
to install your own affiliate program on your server and
administer the affiliate program yourself.

Be forewarned, though, that this is a lot of work. You will be
responsible for all the testing, security, commission payments,
promotion and so on. Another downside: Will your potential
affiliates trust you since their commissions are not tracked
and paid by an independent third party?

4. Use a Hosted Solution

There are good reasons for not hosting your affiliate program
on your server. Perhaps you don`t have the time to administer
all the aspects of an affiliate program. Maybe your time could
be used more productively in other areas of your business.
Additionally, an independent third party tracking and paying
affiliate commissions inspires confidence in prospective
affiliates. Finally, you just might benefit from the additional
exposure that an affiliate network brings you.

ClixGalore.com is an example of an affiliate network. You will
need to pay a $75.00 deposit to cover affiliate commissions.
They charge 25% of any affiliate commissions paid. For example,
if you paid an affiliate a 10% commission on a $100.00 sale, you
would pay the affiliate $10.00 and ClixGalore $2.50.

With ClixGalore, you can also have a two-tier program. Taking
the above example, if you paid affiliates for finding other
affiliates, you might pay 2% on your second tier. That would be
another $2.00 commission and $ .50 affiliate network fee for a
total of $15.00 in commissions on both levels.

5. For All Affiliate Programs

Setup your own web page (or pages) outlining the benefits of
your affiliate program. Offer articles, suggestions, text and
banner links, and other useful support for your affiliates.

Offer a generous commission so that others feel motivated to
sell for you. Obtain the e-mail addresses of your affiliates so
that you can keep in touch with them to aid them to sell more.

For increased traffic, sales and profits, start your own
affiliate program.

Google Is Much More Than A Search Engine

We all know that Google is the dominant search engine, and controls a large percentage of online advertising. But many of us -- even regular Google users -- are not aware of some of Google's other services. Most of them are presented as new ways of listing and categorizing the universe.



However, consistent with Google's new status as a profit-first public corporation, what lies at the root of most of Google's expanding ventures is the need to become less dependent on context-based advertising revenue. In other words, the people at Google are desparately looking for new ways of making money.



**Froogle still looking for a mission in life



Google's product search and comparison tool called Froogle, was launched in December 2002. It was developed in an attempt to cash in on the obvious market for online shopping that major sites like eBay and Amazon had so successfully exploited.



Unlike alternatives like eBay, Froogle lists products for free, and it has no integrated purchase capability. You just look for products by product name or description and are presented with a list of products with links to sites where they are available.



Product information gets into Froogle in one of two ways, according to the Froogle instructions. It can be submitted electronically by merchants, and will then be included in the database. Second, in the course of spidering the web Google's spidering software "automatically identifies webpages that offer products for sale". These are then included in the Froogle database as well.



What Google wants is to make Froogle a product search tool of choice, and open up various monetization opportunities. The obvious ones are embedded advertising and paid listings, but others include direct sales possibilities on the eBay model.



After more than three years Froogle is still called a "beta" suggesting that Google still has no definite plans for it. The latest development was to add "local shopping" information to the listings giving Froogle potential to become an online yellow pages.



**Google Local integrates maps, local product search



Everybody agrees that local search is going to be very big in the next couple of years. Say you're looking for a place to buy an digital camera in a particular city. Just do a search for "digital camera in MyTown", and Google Local will give you a detailed street map of the area along with stores that carry the product, and locations indicated on the map.



Since products are indexed by keyword, you can search for virtually anything, rather than being restricted to the categories pre-defined by a service like the yellow pages.



Also unlike the yellow pages, Google Local includes all stores they have a listing for, not just paying advertisers. Local gives you a map with locations, plus listings with links direct to the stores. The potential for this resource seems awesome.



Plus Google Local has integrated a very slick map utility that arguably looks better (simpler) and in some ways, works faster than other services such as MapQuest. For instance, you can search for a relatively obscure place like Carlyle, Saskatchewan or Brora, Scotland and you are taken to a detailed street map for the entire region. If you are looking for a broader overview of the area, you can just grab the map and scroll along a highway or the coast without having to click on navigation arrows as you do with MapQuest.



Google has also integrated its satellite imaging service into Local. If you are looking at a specific map and would rather see a satellite image of the area, just click on "satellite". Or if you would like to see the satellite image with a map overlay, you can see that too, by clicking on "hybrid".



**Google Video lets you put your videos online



Google Video was introduced in beta back in the spring of 2005, ostensibly to give video producers an outlet for their work. As Google says, "Whether you produce hundreds of titles a year or just a few, you can give your videos the recognition and visibility they deserve by promoting them on Google - for free. Signing up for the Google Video Upload Program will connect your work with users who are most likely to want to view them."



No doubt Google has something else in mind here too -- providing video-related services to generate revenue. The logical move is for Google to eventually build a large library of amateur and then commercially produced videos and moves that it can "rent" on a pay-per-view basis. The company has already taken a step in this direction with its recent AOL alliance in which it committed to promoting AOL's video library.



As John Battelle said in a (http://battellemedia.com/archives/001658.php) June 2004 blog post, "this will help the spread of an alternative universe for video distribution and playback, one independent of the walled garden business model in which video is currently locked... the sooner independent voices have an outlet for their work, and a business model to pay for it, the sooner we'll see content creators revolt from the hegemony of cable and studio models."



But there are other possibilities as well. As Jon Udell says in a (http://weblog.infoworld.com/udell/2005/12/06.html) blog post, "the larger goal is to bring the social effects we see at work in the textual blogosophere into the realm of audio. Linking and quotation drive discovery and shared discourse, but media formats, players, and hosting environments are notoriously hostile to linking and quotation, and I'd really like to see that change."



Google made a move in this direction by switching its player technology to Flash in the fall of 2005. While encoding options for flash (FLV) are still relatively limited, the capabilities to make flash movies more "link-friendly" are much better than the other mainstream alternatives (Quicktime, Windows Media, and Real).



In other words, it is much easier to build hot links and other types of scripting into video and audio using Flash, making it a much better fit with the traditional "interactive" features we expect from the web.



This also gives it more potential for the integration of advertising into pre-existing videos.

What's the first step to becoming a writer? You'd think itwould be "write", but it's not. In speaking to other writersand from what I know of my own journey to becoming a writer,I've come to realize that the biggest obstacle for new writersis that they don't think of themselves as writers. They havetrouble developing the belief that they are writers and yetit's something you have to do. When you haven't developed thatbelief, that conviction, it becomes a source of sabotage--youdon't value your work enough to give it the time and the spaceit needs. How do you come to think of yourself as a writer,especially when you're not earning a paycheck as a writer? Hereare a few tips:
What Happens When You Write?
If you want to be a writer, I'm assuming you feel you havesomething to say and a strong desire to say it. You may notknow how you're going to say it or in what form (poetry, novel,essay, etc.) but you know something is there. Okay, you pick upyour pencil or pen or you sit down to your computer ortypewriter. Write something. Whatever you write, just make sureyour heart is in it. It doesn't have to be perfect, it doesn'thave to be neat. It does have to be expressive.
Next, as painful as it may be, you have to show this writing tosomeone. It can be a friend, it can be a family member. Then,pay attention to what happens. Did the person reading your workcry, laugh or get angry? If so, you did that! It means you canhave an effect with your writing. It's worth something. Youhave to keep going!
A teenager recently wrote to me concerned because she's writingfiction and she's worried her mother will read it and get upsetbecause she thinks it's stuff the teenager really did. On theone hand, that is a bummer to have to explain yourself to yourmother, but on the other hand--wow, that means the young lady'swork is believeable and effective. That kind of feedback is hardto ignore. It's powerful motivation to keep you going--if youtake the time to notice and honor that it's happening. I oncehad a writer say to me, "I don't know if my stuff is any good.I just know that when people read it, they cry." I told her youcan't get a message any clearer than that kind of response. Nowshe just has to listen to it.
Cultivate Silence
If you're having trouble thinking about what it is you have tosay, it may help you to spend some time each day in silence.Some writers pray. Some meditate. The idea is to get used toclearing your brain space and tuning in to your inner voice.You'll also be more aware of those little scraps of possibilityfloating around in your head that can later grow into big ideas.
What Do You Want to Write? Experiment!
It's okay if you don't know what you want to write about. Itmay take a long time journaling for you to see what keepscoming up for you. And it may take longer to find the form thatfits you best. I went from poetry to essays to long-form letterwriting before I settled on fiction. It took me years to dothat. It doesn't mean I won't do anything else in those genres,but what I'm doing right now just fits. I encourage you toexperiment until you find the form that suits your writingbest.
Continually Remind Yourself You Are a Writer
As you develop your belief that you're a writer, it's helpfulto set up reminders that will jog you back to that brain spacethat you need to be in to write. When you sit down to writeit's easy to get distracted and starting thinking about doinglaundry or what's for dinner. You'll want to have somethingeither on your desk or on the wall in front of you that remindsyou to get back to work and that you are a writer.
It might be your list of values that remind you that writing isa part of who you are. It may be simple words such as CREATE orINSPIRE. Isabel Allende, who writes beautiful, historicalnovels will sit in her office with photos around her, oldphotos of people who essentially represent her characters soshe’s surrounded by them. That puts her back into the brainspace of her book because she is sitting in their world; thesepeople are all around her.
What world do you need to be in? The journey you take to getthere will be one of many you'll take as a writer. I hope theseideas will help you take those first steps. What you write--andwhere you go from here--is entirely up to you. Bon Voyage.
